ACCELERATE Thesis program
We are now launching ACCELERATE, a new thesis program within Volvo Group in Sweden, which offers an excellent way to build relationships for the future.
You will be part of building tomorrows innovative transport solutions together with teams of passionate people and get the opportunity to combine theory with practice. For the program participants we can offer you to write a Master or Bachelor thesis and grow with us through product experience sessions and development activities.
You apply by filling in your personal details in the system and attach your resume. We also want you to attach your personal cover letter where we would like you to tell us why you are interested in joining the program and write your thesis for The Volvo Group. If you are two students who want to apply together, please upload both resumes and a common cover letter.
Volvo Construction Equipment as part of the Volvo-group is a successful company within the construction equipment industry.
As a global company we are continuously developing various business concepts. This for as well complete products (trucks, construction machinery etc) as for the service market. In both cases time to market and cost effective solutions are key for success. In order to be even more competitive Volvo is looking into the opportunity to use new techniques for such offerings. One such opportunity is within the area of additive manufacturing.
Based on this, the Aftermarket Purchasing team has since approx.18 months back started to explore additive manufacturing as a key opportunity. So far, we have been successful to implement and use additive manufacturing for some few parts sold and distributed to end customers. Now, we need to take the next step in this and secure that we have the right tools and processes in place. One such important tool is to have a solid business case model as base for our decision making.
The Volvo CE Aftermarket Purchasing team in region EMEA consists in total of 13 persons having its base in Eskilstuna, Sweden. Currently we have one individual working with additive manufacturing on 50% of this time. We firmly believe that additive manufacturing is not an opportunity only for our aftermarket business but also for serial manufacturing and prototyping why we are in close dialogue and co-operation with other functions within the company as well with external partners in order to further extend this opportunity.
We would like explore the opportunity to have a solid business case model developed for regular components and parts, i.e. whether we shall use traditional manufacturing techniques or additive manufacturing. This for as well new developed parts as for parts currently sold as unique aftermarket parts.
Among others the following elements needs to be considered
  • Material properties
  • Volume (number of units)
  • Lead time
  • TCO (Total Cost of Ownership)
  • LCM (Life Cycle Management)
  • Sustainability incl Environmental impact
  • Make or Buy consideration
  • Others
The key task is to develop a model that can be used cross various components and parts internally but also in dialogue with suppliers for their development of new parts or sub-parts.
Student profile and application
Master/bachelor students in Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain or Logistics, or similar fields
